Materials, trash and recycling
project reflection:
For the duration of this project, I learned the effects of natural additives in the bioplastic as opposed to the harsh non-biodegradable, oil-based plastic we consume/ use in our everyday lives. Essentially bioplastic is formed by identical chemical subunits that link together in the form of a chain. Bioplastic has better stability and is more flexible to shape. Chemical quantities of the substance determine the physical properties of the product. Gathering from this project, the number of materials such as the starch or glycerin overall determine the durability and product of the bioplastic. That the more or less of quantities of the material can make the bond weaker affecting the production of the bioplastic by testing the flexibility of the product.

In my research, on making paper I noticed that the pulp and paper industry uses more water to produce this product than any other industry. Comparing my result to my research, I realized that this whole papermaking process takes large quantities of water, making the water non-useable. The bonds of the fibers and pulp make the paper more durable and sustainable. The thicker the pulp, the more durable the paper.
As consumers, I think most of us avoid the effects of the consumption of the products we buy on a daily basis. The effects on the environment globally. The development of a case of plastic water bottles is apart of the 5% of worldwide oil consumptions. As the consumers, we may try our best to recycle but in the end, we still buy and consumer products that effect of environment. |
During this project, I learned with starch is best to make bioplastic that is most flexible and durable. That we as consumer fail to realize the influence we have on the environment. How little changes such as replacing regular paper and plastic with bioplastic and recycled paper can affect our consumption levels. How the papermaking process takes in a large consumption of water. It makes me question about the excess water, with the leftover pulp and the effects on how that alone has on the environment. Throughout, this project was a very eye-opening experience.
Overall, I would consider my grade for this project a B. I used my time well spent throughout this project. The end product was to what I believe to be beautiful work. During the exhibition, I arrived on time in a professional dress and interacted with my audience.
