Libros de Niños:
In Nicaragua many of the children down there don't have access to books and lack the knowledge also fall behind in reading. Our class wrote children's books to share with the rural communities in Nicaragua and raised money to send them our complete books to the children. I want to write a story about a journey through the seasons in the eyes that a bear see. So, that kids down in Nicaragua can learn something about bears and the fact that the have to go into hibernation. I hope that the children down in Nicaragua will learn from my book is the story through a bears journey before he has to go into hibernation and the different activities along with weather of that the seasons witness in that time of year.
Dia de los Muertos Project:
Dia de los Muertos - the day of the dead - is a two day holiday which originated in Mexico to remember deceased loved ones. On Dia de los Muertos, families gather to celebrate those who have died, as well as build altars to pay homage to the decreased. Many honor the dead with gifts like sugar skulls, marigolds, sweetbread and trinkets. The original holiday was actually a month long event, but when the Spanish conquistadores arrived and turned Mexican Catholic, the celebration became intertwined with All Saints day (Nov.1) and All Soul's Day (Nov. 2). It's a Mexican national holiday and the largest celebration of the year, it will extend from Spain to the Mexican-American communities in the United States.
I chose to celebrate Kurt Cobain because I felt like it would be hard for me to do a family member. I grew up listening to his music and trying to play them on guitar. It was very interesting to find out new things about him. For example, during my research i found out that as you drive into his hometown, Aberdeen, the welcome sign reads” Welcome to Aberdeen. Come as you are” that is a name from one of his songs. Making the altar for Kurt Cobain was very hard because I felt my altar was lacking on the personal items. Overall it was fun, I enjoyed crafting the papel picado because it was a challenge and in the end it turned out beautiful. Overall, I feel pretty good because I put in made an effort making the papel picado and on my altar. I do feel like I have a better understanding of what Dia de los Muertos is and that we got to have our own celebration. |
